Quintessence of the Adriatic

Look how almost tangible this dark blue is! The sea is amazing. This is one of my favourite photos ever of the Adriatic sea, and though it was taken on Christmas day 2006, I'd like nothing better than to throw myself upon the dark waves.

When sunlight passes through the sea, photons with shorter wavelengths and more energy (blue and violet) pass through easily and appear to colour the sea darker blue because they are at some point reflected back up, while red, yellow and green light fades after a few meters. A large majority of the refracted blue photons from the sky get reflected from the surface, which also makes it blue. Finally, underwater flora and various particles suspended in the water also affect what photons are reflected back to the viewer. Combined, the sea appears blue. This of course depends on the position of the viewer, time of day, chemical contents of the sea and meteorological conditions. It would be a photographer's job to capture the results ^^ I'm not a photographer, but I think the timing for this light I captured with my lens was within parameters of perfection.
